Characterization of VOCs emitted from unconventional natural gas development

Biosketch

My postdoc assignment will focus on the measurement of volatile organic compounds released during the drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and flowback stages of natural gas well development. The project aims to quantify emissions from the well pad activities and to examine the dispersion of emitted materials in the nearby area downwind of these activities. Measurements will include a variety of real-time monitors as well as the collection of integrated samples for laboratory analysis.

My graduate work at Rice University focused on the chemical characterization and source apportionment of coarse and fine particulate matter (PM) in Pinal County, Arizona, a region experiencing some of the highest coarse particle (PMc) concentration in the country. A year-long sampling campaign was conducted to collect ambient PM samples as well as soil samples from potential regional sources. This dataset was then used to determine the most likely sources contributing to coarse PM as well as PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations using both the Positive Matrix Factorization and Chemical Mass Balance modeling techniques. Additional work investigated saccharides as potential marker species for agriculture and other biological influences, the transformation of chemical species down-wind of roadways, and heterogeneous sulfate formation by atmospheric minerals. Graduate work at Caltech focused on the detection and quantification of 2-methyltetrols, photo-oxidation products of isoprene, from samples collected in the SEARCH Network in the Southeastern US.

Prior to my graduate studies, I worked as the Senior Site Operator at the St. Louis-Midwest Supersite. During that assignment, I oversaw the staff and daily operations of more than twenty different types of instruments collecting and analyzing ambient fine particulate matter for mass, size, and chemical composition.
