Organic aerosol markers in atmospheric processes, biomass burning emissions

Biosketch

Much of my current research focuses on trying to better understand the chemistry and composition of ambient aerosols.  To do this, I conduct measurements of and develop methods to analyze the composition of aerosols.  This is done by collecting samples on the ground and airborne both in near real-time using techniques such as a Particle-into-Liquid Sampler (PILS) and off-line using filters.  Many of the analysis techniques I employ on these samples involves liquid chromatography.  Along with traditional anion and cation chromatography, I have developed methods for measuring carbohydrates using high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) as well as organic acids and amines.

During my Ph.D. work at Georgia Tech I developed a method to measure water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) aerosols in real-time both on the ground and when airborne. I also developed methods to chemically characterize WSOC using XAD-8 resin and size-exclusion chromatography. Both these techniques were then used to try to further understand the sources of WSOC.
