Long-term IMPROVE filter data show that wintertime nitrate aerosol concentrations at Mammoth Cave National Park, KY, have consistently been higher over the past 10 years. Nitrate formation/evaporation is a function of precursors, meteorological conditions, and existing particle composition that determine particle liquid water content and pH. Therefore, it is important to identify the factors leading to nitrate formation to understand how to best control precursor emissions.
